Created in 1978 by Ordinance No. 3214, the Brazilian Regulatory Standards (NR) are procedures and guidelines related to employee health and safety in the workplace. Supported by the Labor Laws Consolidation (CLT), they must be followed by any Brazilian company, public or private, and its employees. However, only the NRs related to the activities of the segment in which they operate. The elaboration and revision of NRs are a responsibility of the Ministry of Labor and Social Security.
The main purposes of the NRs are to ensure the physical and psychological integrity of employees, preventing accidents at work or occupational diseases, to establish minimum parameters of health and safety at work, to guide companies’ actions, and to instruct employees regarding health and safety at work.
